Workshops

Music workshops should inspire the experienced music teacher to try out new ideas and materials and encourage the beginning music teacher to develop sound music education practices. Workshops with Denise Gagne are valuable for both the experienced music teacher and the classroom teacher with limited musical training.

Denise Gagne is a music specialist with many years of experience teaching band, choir and classroom music. Denise has a Bachelor of Music from the University of Victoria, a Bachelor of Education from the University of Saskatchewan, a Diploma in Music from the University of Auckland, and a Post Graduate Diploma in Fine Arts (Kodaly) from the University of Calgary with Lois Choksy. She has had Orff training with Jos Wuytack and Donna Otto.

Denise is currently on leave from teaching elementary music in Red Deer, Alberta. During her time as music teacher her choirs and bands won many awards at Music Festivals and performed for many different events including Hockey Games, the Brier, and Civic functions- even a performance for the Queen. Denise has written and published materials for teaching elementary classroom music and band. Her workshops are fun, practical, and activity based!

We have several other clinicians who may be available for workshops if Denise is booked. For kindergarten, we have the authors of the “Alphabet Activities Book”, Carmen Bryant and Roberta Rovtar. For Musicplay and Boomwhackers Danece Workman has given some excellent workshops.

"Dear Denise,
Thanks seems hardly adequate for the wonderful "kick-off" for the year you gave those of us attending your workshop in Sioux City last Friday. I just kept thinking as I listened, "What a great idea!!" I have heard so many positive comments from other teachers who were there--in fact, some said it was the best Friday workshop we've had for a number of years. We could really tell that you're "in the trenches' with kids just like the rest of us...It was a pleasure to meet you and I hope to have the opportunity to attend another one of your workshops someday."

"First the kudos.....
You're a hit! Thanks for the lesson plans for the week. 'The Movement Songs' are going over like hotcakes, and the kids are coming in saying 'My sister was singing something about a jelly bean. Can we learn it,too?......Can we do that skateboard one again?' What a talent you have!

Now the complaints....
I think the bus drivers union is going to file a formal complaint against me. From what I understand, the "jellybean song" is the new favorite on the ride home, with the kids making up things that they can do in their seats. "

"I absolutely have rave reviews about your workshop in Sioux City. I got a tremendous amount of ideas. Many of them I have known, heard before, or have used; but I needed my brain refreshed and energized. I found a huge bumble bee like yours on Saturday and I made a small one out of yellow pom-poms and those fuzzy black pipe cleaners. The kids had a great time. I didn't know they could keep the beat that well!
Thank you, Thank you!"
-- Paula Stevens --

"Denise,
Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed your sessions at Missouri Music Educators last week! You had so many great ideas and to put them into
reproducible form is so wonderful on our tight budgets! Thanks again for sharing all your info and hope you had a safe trip back to Canada!"
-- Patti Kelly --

"Hi Denise
I want to thank you so much for the wonderful workshop (Italian Cultural Centre - Tuesday, October 15). It was by far the most useful workshop I have ever attended. Usually I think that a workshop is good if I go away with say, three to five new ideas that I can use. But yours was so comprehensive in every way, that I came away with far more than three to five. And the binder - I had no idea that it had so much in it -- I didn't realize that it had accompaniment CDs for recorder. I'm really thrilled about this - it will really help with evaluation. I've already used the first song and CD in the supplementary movement song book - the one about 'Elephants have Wrinkles'."

"Denise, just finished your workshop at YRDSB. Brilliant! I will encourage my colleagues to purchase and use your materials. I will be getting them too. Thanks very much for sharing your expertise."
