By Stuart Manins
Illustrated by Jenni Webb

-

So-me walked down the road
towards school.
He had a shiny new school-bag
on his back, and on it
where the letters s m.
They stood for his name, So-me.

He liked his name.
He liked the way that it went from
high to low.
Just like a seesaw.

In her high voice Tammy called out,
In his lower voice Hone sang out,

So-me liked walking to school
with his two friends.

Mrs Clapham the class teacher
asked all the children
to tell her their names.

So-me suprised them all
by singing his song...

Everyone in the class thought
that this was such a happy song
that they all sang his song together.

Tammy wanted to sing all by herself,
so she put up her hand
and Mrs Claphad let her stand up
and sing on her own.

In her high voice she sang.
Mrs Clapham was so pleased
that she laughed out loud.

She said that one day
Tammy might be a famous singer
on radio and television
Tammy was pleased too.

Soon the game caught on.
When Hone's turn came,
he sang to So-me in his low voice,

Each time after one of the children had sung,
the children had sung,
the class joined in
just like an echo...
It was a lot of fun!

Mrs Ross the Head teacher
opened the classroom door
to see what on earth was going on.
Mrs Clapham sang to her in fun,
Head teaher, Head teacher, what is your name?

.

The children smiled when
Mrs Ross sang back,
Mrs Ross and I'm the Boss
who made up this game?

So-me stood up.
He was glad that Mrs Ross
was only pretending to be angry.
At least he thought that Mrs Ross
was only pretending to be angry.

In fact Mrs Ross was pleased.
She asked So-me to sing his song
into the school tape-recorder,
and said that she would like to play to the whole school.

The next day,
as soon as Mrs Ross had said
"Good morning" to the whole school,
she played So-me's song
and everyone listened quietly.
They clapped when it was finished.

So-me was so happy.
He walked home thinking the tune,
He walked in time to Mrs Ross's voice.

The picture of Mrs Ross
and the memory of his song
stayed clearly in his mind
as he walked on
up the hill towards home.
